Named after an inn built in 1804 in style of a Swiss chalet and erected on a former tollgate keeper’s cottage, Swiss Cottage formed part of the ancient parish of Hampstead.
The area developed following the Finchley Road Act 1826 - which approved the construction of Finchley New Road and Avenue Road, with The Swiss Tavern at the junction of the two new roads.

The neighbourhood around Finchley Road and Avenue Road was redeveloped in the 1930’s with the opening of the Odeon cinema, the mansion blocks Regency Lodge on Adelaide Road, Boydell Court on St John’s Wood Park, Northways on College Crescent and some of the houses on Avenue Road.

Extensive rebuilding followed after the destruction to the area from World War II, with the construction of Centre Heights and Cresta House on Finchley Road, no.100 Avenue Road and the large scale housing developments on Boundary Road and St John’s Wood Park (namely Queensmead).
However, most post-war housing built in Swiss Cottage was by the local authority on Hilgrove Road, Dorman Way, Alexandra Road and Harben Road.
In 2000, Camden Council and a multi-disciplinary design team developed schemes for the Swiss Cottage Redevelopment Project, with the Grade II Listed Central Library at the heart of the project.
The project formed part of a significant complex including the Hampstead Theatre and the new state-of-the-art Swiss Cottage Leisure Centre - housing a gymnasium, indoor swimming pools, squash courts, a sports field, doctors facilities, a cafeteria and outdoor open space.
The Visage Apartments building - comprising 131 high quality apartments and penthouses, was built adjacent to the Library and Leisure Centre.

Swiss Cottage is now one of the cultural centres within the London Borough of Camden - with local amenities including the Odeon IMAX Cinema, the Grade II-listed Swiss Cottage Central Library and the adjacent Leisure Centre and Hampstead Theatre.

The Swiss Cottage Farmer's Market sits on a lovely stretch of space on Eton Avenue on Wednesdays and Fridays.

The postcodes covering Swiss Cottage are NW3 to the East and North, NW8 to the South and NW6 to the West.

Council Tax in Swiss Cottage is levied by Camden local authority.
